At See-LEVEL, we pride ourselves on the innovative strides we have made in combating seasickness through virtual reality. As we continue to enhance our technology, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on our journey and recognize the individuals who helped us pave the way. One such individual is Luke Standing, who was one of our first test volunteers back in 2019.
A Pioneering Experience on Lyttelton Harbour
In 2019, we set out to test the prototype version of our VR headset using the Oculus Go on Lyttelton Harbour. Luke, a seasick-prone passenger, graciously volunteered to experience our groundbreaking technology on a 6.5m powerboat. His enthusiasm and willingness to participate were instrumental in shaping the future of See-LEVEL.
During this initial trial, Luke was impressed by what we had created, providing invaluable feedback that would help us refine our technology. However, the Oculus Go lacked many of the user-friendly features found in our current headsets, making the setup process more cumbersome. Each time, a technician had to configure the software before Luke could don the headset and test the virtual environment.
Exploring New Frontiers
At the time, we were also experimenting with habituation learning by injecting movement into the VR scenes. This approach was designed to help users adapt to motion and reduce the likelihood of seasickness. In 2019, we had a multitude of ideas and research avenues to explore, essentially inventing the wheel in the world of VR seasickness solutions.
The footage captured during these early tests was kept confidential as we awaited approval for our patent later that year. This moment marked a significant milestone for See-LEVEL, validating our efforts and paving the way for future developments.
Looking Back with Gratitude
As we reflect on Luke’s pivotal role in our journey, we are filled with gratitude for the early volunteers who believed in our mission. Their contributions not only helped us test and improve our product but also fueled our passion for creating effective solutions for seasickness.
Today, thanks to the insights from pioneers like Luke, See-LEVEL has evolved into a cutting-edge solution that combines advanced technology with user-centric design. We continue to innovate and improve our offerings, ensuring that we meet the needs of our users in the maritime community.
